Taking the Confusion Out of Carpeting

Fill Small Cracks In Concrete Basement Walls And Apply A Sealer To Them

If there are small cracks surrounding the windows that are located in your basement's interior concrete walls, fill them with concrete patch by completing the steps below. After you have finished, apply an even coat of sealer to each wall to provide your home's basement with a layer of protection that will prevent moisture from entering your home.

Materials

  • plastic sheeting
  • putty knife
  • wire brush
  • bucket of soapy water
  • sponge
  • tube of concrete patch
  • caulk gun
  • hand trowel
  • concrete waterproofing sealer
  • paint tray
  • paint roller
  • extension handle
  • paintbrush

Remove Loose Pieces Of Concrete And Clean The Walls

Place plastic sheeting on the floor, next to each interior wall in the basement. Move a putty knife or wire brush over the damaged areas to remove loose pieces of concrete. Remove dirty residue from the interior walls with soapy water and a sponge. Rinse the sponge out when you are done and wipe the walls with plain water. Wait for the concrete to dry.

Repair The Cracks

Pull out the plunger that is located on the back of a caulk gun. Insert a tube of concrete patch in the tool's open chamber and push in the plunger to hold the tube in place. Apply an even coat of patch to each crack by aiming the tool's tip at the damaged areas while squeezing the gun's trigger. Use the flat side of a hand trowel to smooth out the patch so that it is flush with the rest of each wall's surface. Wait several hours for the patch to harden.

Apply A Coat Of Waterproofing Sealer

Fill a paint tray with concrete waterproofing sealer. Use a paint roller that is attached to an extension handle to apply the sealer in straight lines. Move the roller across each wall from top to bottom. If there are any fine details in the walls that are difficult to cover with a roller, use a paintbrush to coat them with concrete sealer. Wait the amount of time that is listed on the back of the basement waterproofing product's can for the sealer to dry.

Maintain The Interior Walls

The waterproofing sealer will help keep the basement dry. Maintain the interior walls and prevent additional cracks from forming in the concrete by cleaning them with soapy water and a sponge on occasion. Wipe the walls off with a sponge that has been dampened with plain water afterwards and allow the walls to air dry or wipe them off with a towel. These basic maintenance steps will keep the interior walls clean and damage-free.
